MVT Helps Homeless Warm Up & Be Counted This Winter

Monday January 28, 2019

The MVT CID is always in search of ways to responsibly contribute to unmet societal needs through partnership with stakeholders and community partners—and extends our gratitude to residents and office workers at the following for properties for rallying on behalf of neighbors in need during our recent Winter Warm Up Clothing Drive:

Held January 14-22 in residential and commercial properties in and around the MVT CID, the Winter Warm Up Clothing Drive generated substantial donations of gently used clothing for clients of the Central Union Mission men’s shelter, Martha’s Table, the Community for Creative Non-Violence Shelter, So Others Might Eat (SOME) and Blair House for Men.

In addition to that effort, the MVT CID’s Kenyattah Robinson last night joined 300 other local volunteers to participate in the annual nationwide “Point in Time” census of persons experiencing homelessness. From 9pm until 2am, volunteer teams led by trained homeless outreach professionals canvassed the District (including areas around Mount Vernon Triangle) for unsheltered persons and conducted a brief survey about their experiences and service needs. Data from the count assists with Federal decisions regarding allocations of valuable social and supportive services dollars nationwide, and informs local leaders on how to best allocate funding and services for the year.

Please remember that if you encounter a neighbor who is experiencing homelessness and needs assistance, to call the DC Shelter Hotline at (202) 399-7093You’re under no obligation to engage or interact with the citizen and your assistance will go a long way toward helping those in need receive the valuable housing assistance that they rightfully deserve.
