National Building Museum Gets Snarky this Summer

The National Building Museum has done it again, blending the disciplines of architecture, engineering and design to bring us “Fun House,” the 2018 Summer Block Party exhibition for the Museum’s Great Hall.

Designed by Snarkitecture, the same group that covered the Great Hall with nearly one million recyclable translucent plastic balls in 2015 as part of “The BEACH” installation, “Fun House” conveys the colorful 10-year story of Snarkitecture while underlining the studio’s peculiar, yet accessible way of reinterpreting the built environment. Running July 4 through September 3, 2018, the exhibit will feature Ward Days as in years past plus a late-night series on Wednesday nights.

Located at 401 F Street NW just steps from the MVT CID, the National Building Museum is America’s leading cultural institution devoted to interpreting the history and impact of the built environment. Here’s a rundown of some of their other current, upcoming and ongoing exhibits:

  • Making Room – Housing for a Changing America – The creative, non-traditional effort currently underway to find new ways to develop housing in America. Through September 16, 2018
  • Evicted – An immersive experience bringing visitors into the world of low-income renter eviction. Through May 19, 2019
  • Community Policing in the Nation’s Capital – A new exhibition commemorating the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination exploring Washington, DC’s experiment in community policing. Through January 15, 2019
  • Secret Cities – Dive into the design, construction and daily life of the Manhattan Project secret cities in the U.S. May 3, 2018 through March 3, 2019
  • House & Home – Through interactive displays, historic home objects and film, discover both familiar and surprising, challenging ideas about what it means to live at home in America. Ongoing
