PARK(ing) Day 2020
September 18, 2020 @ 5:00 am - 12:00 pm EDT
ABOUT
Join MVT CID as we celebrate PARK(ing) Day 2020 this Friday, September 18 from 9am-4pm. A global event that occurs annually in September, PARK(ing) Day is aimed at reclaiming on-street parking spaces by temporarily transforming them into exciting and imaginative park spaces or “parklets.” We’re working closely with partners to showcase a diverse range of public infrastructure initiatives – from open space and utility enhancements, to non-motorized transportation and alley safety improvements – all designed to support Mount Vernon Triangle’s continued growth and maturation.
WHERE & HOW
Located in front of Lydian + Lyric Apartments and the Joe & The Juice, Varnish Lane and la Betty retail storefronts at 400 K Street NW, and in line with public health protocols for social distancing, MVT CID’s parklet will feature a mix of virtual and in-person opportunities for all to safely enjoy.
SCHEDULE
PARK(ing) Day is a great opportunity to ask questions and learn more and about important public realm initiatives with wide-spread community impact, so check out the schedule below and plan to stop by in person or RSVP to tune in by Zoom for any or all of the programming opportunities featured below:
9:30-10:30am: Mount Vernon Substation & Capital Grid Project with Pepco. As part of Pepco’s Capital Grid Project currently underway, a new Mount Vernon Substation will be constructed at 1st & K Streets NW to support of our community’s electricity and power needs as we continue to grow. Capital Grid will also upgrade three existing substations in DC and Maryland, and builds a new 10-mile underground transmission line to connect the substations and create a networked system through which electricity is delivered to Pepco’s customers.
11am-Noon: K Street Protected Bicycle Lanes with the District Department of Transportation (DDOT). Learn more about efforts underway to build new protected bike lane infrastructure between 7th Street NW and 1st Street NE in support of the enhanced safety of bicyclists traveling to and through our community.
12:30-1:30pm: Prather’s Alley Safety Infrastructure Improvements Project with EL Studio & urbanSEED. As part of an ongoing effort to rethink possibilities for our neighborhood’s alleys, MVT CID has worked closely with EL Studio, urbanSEED, DDOT, the Office of Planning and community stakeholders to improve the safety and enhance the visual appeal of this important vehicle and pedestrian transportation route for our neighborhood. Come learn about the positive momentum that has occurred since we solicited community feedback on three design options for implementation within Prather’s Alley—and plans for next steps now that our grant funding request has been awarded!
2-3pm: Cobb Park Phase One Reactivation & “Ready2Play” District Master Plan with DC Department of Parks and Recreation. Enhancement and activation of our limited park and open space resources remain a top priority for both our community and city. Speak with leaders engaged in these efforts to learn about plans underway to increase the quality and availability of much-desired green space amenities within Mount Vernon Triangle and across the District of Columbia.
3:30-4pm: Community Open Session with MPD. Capt. Jonathan Dorrough of the Metropolitan Police Department’s First District will be in attendance (virtually) to discuss community safety.
Special guest appearances during the day by Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen and his constituent services team.
RSVP is required to receive a personalized Zoom link allowing you to visit the parklet virtually. And, please stay tuned to our social media accounts @mvtcid for inclement weather updates and announcements regarding timing for our special guests!
