Kushi Opens at City Vista
(202) 661-7590 Kushi: izakaya mvtbill@downtowndc.org
For Immediate Release March 1, 2010 (Washington, D.C.) Kushi, a Japanese pub that serves food (izakaya), opened to the public on March 2, 2010 in the CityVista complex. Husband and wife team Darren Lee Norris and Ari Kushimoto Norris partnered to open their 4,000 square foot space at 465 K Street, NW.
The Kushi experience begins when guests pass underneath a large linen noren into the center of the restaurant with a 30-seat robata bar featuring an open charcoal fire pit. True to the tradition of authentic izakaya, the kushiyaki and robata menus offer mid-sized plates that can be ordered throughout the meal and paired with Kushi’s beer, shochu, and sake selections.
“We had to build our kitchen from scratch,” said co-owner Darren Lee Norris. “Since this has never been done before, we had to figure out how to build this unique kitchen and make it work.”
Kushi’s fish is sourced locally or flown in twice weekly from the world’s largest fish market in Tokyo. Diners looking to take home some of Kushi’s unique fish selections or observe the cooks preparing the fish may do so in the fish market area of the restaurant.
Kushi incorporates the talents of several excellent chefs. Chef Darren Lee Norris was most recently the Executive Chef of Bethesda-based Ridgewells Caterers and previously held the position of Executive Chef at NYC’s China Grille. Ari Kushimoto Norris was the previous Art Director for AOL and, as an accomplished graphic artist, manages Kushi’s interior design and marketing. Behind the sushi bar, you will find Sushi Chef Yoshihisa Ota, who is chef-owner of the highly acclaimed Tokyo restaurant, Ginza Gakyu, and is a rising star on the Tokyo sushi scene.
The Kushi/Ginza Gakyu partnership is the first and only edition of the Tokyo restaurant in the United States. Visit Kushi’s website at www.eatkushi.com.
