Washington, DC – Liberty Market, a new outdoor farmers market, is now open at Mount Vernon Square every Tuesday afternoon from 2:30-6:30 p.m. The market is located near the intersection of 7th and K Streets, NW on the grounds of the old Carnegie Library, now home to The Historical Society of Washington DC. Liberty Market features fresh produce as well as prepared foods and beverages, artists selling their work, and live music.

“We are very excited to have opened a farmers market at Mount Vernon Square,” said Michael Berman, president of Diversified Markets Management. “Liberty Market is an outstanding location right in the center of downtown DC with new residents, retailers, and offices in this burgeoning neighborhood.”

The goal of Liberty Market is to have the finest fresh produce, promote community sustainability, emphasize the importance of supporting local farmers, create awareness of unique foods, and showcase local artists and musicians. The market also serves to animate and enliven Mount Vernon Square – at the confluence of New York Avenue, Massachusetts Avenue, 9th Street, 8th Street, 7th Street, and K Street, NW.

Liberty Market takes its name from the time when Northern Liberties Market, one of five DC public market houses, was located at Mount Vernon Square from 1846 to 1872. The market later expanded to 5th and K Streets, NW. The area north of Massachusetts Avenue, NW was considered beyond the civilized part of town in the early 19th century – hence the moniker “Northern Liberties.”

Liberty Market is produced by Michael Berman of Diverse Markets Management in cooperation with The Historical Society of Washington, D.C. Diverse Markets Management also produces the Sunday market at Eastern Market and the Downtown Holiday Market. Farmers and providers of fresh and prepared foods as well as artists are encouraged to vend.
