FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 8, 2008
Washington, D.C., September 8, 2008 – The Mount Vernon Triangle Community Improvement District (MVTCID) announced today that Safeway will open its urban lifestyle store – its first within the District of Columbia in 11 years – on September 12, 2008.

The store will be the first full-service grocery store to operate in downtown Washington, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty is scheduled to attend the opening with a press conference and ribbon-cutting ceremony at 12:00 pm.

“The new Safeway is a wonderful addition to Mount Vernon Triangle and boon for all the new residents of the community and surrounding neighborhoods,” said Jeff Miller, chairman of the MVTCID. “Its opening signals the evolution of this neighborhood into a vibrant and vital component of the District's downtown fabric.”

The new 57,600 square-foot facility will serve as the anchor retailer in the newly opened CityVista development at 5th and K Streets, NW. Safeway will offer quality groceries to the residents occupying the 685 condo and apartment units above the store, along with the thousands of residents living in Mount Vernon Triangle and to the north in Shaw, east in NoMa, South in Penn Quarter, and west in Logan Circle.

The CityVista Safeway will include some of the company’s latest features such as the first Safeway in the city equipped with a nut bar, wine cellar, and an open-flame hearth oven within the full-service scratch bakery. The hearth oven, where Artisan breads will be baked fresh daily, will be the focal point for the full-service bakery with the nut bar offering a wide selection of warm, ready-to-eat nuts that can be flavored or ground on site to create spreads and peanut butter.

“The Safeway opening in Mount Vernon Triangle is an exciting opportunity for us to celebrate the first full-service grocery store in downtown Washington, D.C. and our first [new store] in the city in more than 10 years,” said Steve Neibergall, Eastern Division president of Safeway. “We’re using this opening to highlight our company-wide lifestyle redevelopment effort to show District officials and residents that this new format will be available in our other stores throughout the city.”

Customers will be able to enjoy the new amenities found in many Safeway stores, such as a Starbucks Coffee bar and Bergmann’s Dry Cleaners, along with the more traditional offerings of a pharmacy, full-service deli, meat counter, floral shop and seafood department.

Bryan Jacobs will serve as the store’s first manager. Jacobs, a second-generation Safeway employee, has been a store manager for the past three years, most recently at the company’s South Lakes store in Reston, Va. He also had assignments in Bethesda and Silver Spring, Md., during his five years with Safeway.

The new store will employ 150 people, many of whom either reside in the immediate neighborhood (approximately 30 percent) or are District of Columbia residents. Safeway worked closely with the Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners, local churches, MVTCID, and other community-based organizations to identify people to be considered for the new store’s workforce.

Safeway is a Fortune 100 company and one of the largest food and drug retailers in North America, based on sales. The company operates approximately 1,750 stores in the United States and western Canada and had annual sales of $42.6 billion in 2007.
