In October 2006, the Mount Vernon Triangle Community Improvement District board and membership approved a new business plan and tax rate structure, which was approved by the City Council in December 2006 and by Congress on March 12, 2007.
“Changing the tax rate and structure will enable the Mount Vernon Triangle Community Improvement District to expand its services to include a Safety Team,” said Bill McLeod, executive director of the Mount Vernon Triangle Community Improvement District. “This is a real turning point for this commercial and residential improvement district.”
The new annual Mount Vernon Triangle Community Improvement District real property tax structure is based on land use, and is as follows: $0.35 per square foot of vacant land, or $0.15 per square foot of commercial property, or $120 per residential unit (condominiums, cooperatives, and apartments), or $90 per hotel room.
The purpose of the Mount Vernon Triangle Community Improvement District is to make the neighborhood clean, safe, and friendly. The Mount Vernon Triangle Community Improvement District’s most visible service is the Clean Team workers in blue and gray uniforms, who provide cleaning services in public space seven hours a day, seven days a week.
“We are moving from a start-up to a full-service business improvement district through this tax rate change,” stated Gerry Widdicombe, board member of the Mount Vernon Triangle Community Improvement District.
The Mount Vernon Triangle Community Improvement District currently provides clean services to Mount Vernon Triangle. In the month of February, 527 bags of trash were collected, which accounted for 15,810 pounds of rubbish removed from the neighborhood. As the first business improvement district in DC to include residential property, the Mount Vernon Triangle Community Improvement District joins six business improvement districts in the City of Washington DC.
